Symptoms and Causes

Neuropathy refers to a group of conditions that affect the nerves, and the symptoms can vary depending on the type and severity of neuropathy.

COMMON SYMPTOMS INCLUDE:

1. Numbness and Tingling: Often the first signs, these sensations may start in the extremities, such as the fingers and toes, and progress upwards.

2. Burning or Shooting Pain: Patients may experience sharp, shooting pains or a persistent burning sensation, which can be quite uncomfortable.

3. Loss of Sensation: Neuropathy can lead to reduced sensitivity to touch or temperature changes, making it difficult to detect injuries or discomfort.

4. Muscle Weakness: As nerves are impaired, muscles may weaken, leading to difficulties with coordination and balance.

5.
Painful Cramps and Spasms: Some individuals with neuropathy experience muscle cramps and spasms, often at night.

6. Sensitivity to Touch: In certain cases, even a light touch can cause pain or discomfort.

7. Loss of Reflexes: Reflexes may become diminished or absent, particularly in the affected areas.

8. Loss of Balance:  When there is damage to the nerves, your brain no longer knows where your feet are, and this can lead to falls.  Falls are listed as the number 1 cause of accidental death in the elderly.

COMMON CAUSES OF NEUROPATHY:

1. Diabetes: Diabetic neuropathy is one of the most common forms and is associated with prolonged high blood sugar levels.

2. Trauma or Injury: Physical trauma, such as accidents or sports injuries, can damage nerves.

3. Infections: Certain viral or bacterial infections, like shingles or Lyme disease, can lead to neuropathy.

4. Autoimmune Diseases: Conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or lupus can result in nerve damage due to the body's immune system attacking its own tissues.

5. Toxic Substances: Exposure to certain toxins or chemicals, such as alcohol, chemotherapy drugs, or heavy metals, can harm nerves.

6. Hereditary Factors: Some forms of neuropathy are genetically inherited and can run in families.

7. Medications: Certain medications, especially when used long-term, can have neuropathy as a side effect.

8. Nutritional Deficiencies: Inadequate intake of essential nutrients like vitamin B12 or folate can contribute to neuropathy.

9. Alcohol Abuse: Excessive alcohol consumption can directly damage nerves, leading to neuropathy.

10. Cancer: Tumors or the pressure they exert on nerves can cause neuropathic symptoms.

It's important to note that neuropathy symptoms can vary widely and depend on the underlying cause.

If you suspect you have neuropathy, it's advisable to book a consult for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
